According to journalist Romain Collet-Gaudin—corroborating reports from Record—Renato Sanches, the 29-year-old Portuguese midfielder who is now a free agent, has terminated his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. This move brings an end to a four-year stint in Paris, during which he played only one actual season for the club before a series of loans made his departure inevitable.
A Parisian stint that never really took off
This termination definitively closes a chapter Paris Saint-Germain had been trying to resolve for several weeks. Renato Sanches still had a year remaining on his contract—running until June 2027—but was no longer part of the club’s sporting plans. The Portuguese player is now free to join the club of his choice.
Having arrived from LOSC in the summer of 2022 for a fee of around €15 million on a five-season deal, Sanches represented a relatively low-risk gamble for Paris at the time. Luis Campos and Christophe Galtier knew the player well, particularly given his role in Lille’s 2021 French league title win.
However, things never really clicked. During his only season with PSG, the Portuguese midfielder made 27 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals. His playing time was limited, and injuries frequently prevented him from establishing any real consistency in the Parisian midfield.
The remainder of his contract was defined largely by a series of loan spells. Sanches joined AS Roma in 2023, Benfica in 2024, and Panathinaikos in 2025—three consecutive attempts to revive his career that failed to lead to a lasting return to the PSG rotation.
This parting of ways is therefore a logical outcome for both parties. PSG permanently frees up a spot in its squad and turns the page on a signing that never yielded the hoped-for results. For his part, Sanches regains his freedom and can now choose his next project without the need for a transfer negotiation with Paris. At 29, the Portuguese player will primarily seek to regain the stability he has so sorely lacked since arriving in the capital.
