JJ Gabriel, a 15-year-old English forward at Manchester United, is considered one of the top talents of his generation and has earned the nickname “Kid Messi.” According to several media outlets, he has caused a stir in England by requesting the termination of his contract. The Athletic reports that major suitors are circling, including Paris Saint-Germain.

“Real Madrid are among several European clubs working on a deal to sign JJ Gabriel from Manchester United.

Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also trying to recruit the 15-year-old winger.

The matter has come to a head after Gabriel informed United he wants to leave and handed in a letter of de-registration.

United have no intention of granting that request and are hopeful a resolution can be found. The Premier League club acknowledge he is an exceptional talent and are trying to keep him.

“He could technically leave on his 16th birthday.”

The player’s contract runs to next summer but, as he is not yet either a scholar nor part of United’s full-time model, due to being homeschooled, he could technically leave on his 16th birthday if he has an Irish or Cypriot passport.

Either passport would allow him to move to a foreign club two years earlier than he would be permitted were he solely English. Regulations after Brexit mean players must be 18 to transfer out of England, unless they are a dual national with a country in the European Union. Gabriel’s father Joe O’Cearuill won two caps for the Republic of Ireland, while his mother has Cypriot heritage.

Several generally reliable media outlets have reported on this story; it is likely that JJ Gabriel has indeed—at the very least—indicated to Manchester United that he would like to leave. However, one must remain cautious regarding other aspects of this tricky situation. The forward has not yet left, and the English club is not opening the door to a move; negotiations could still result in an improved contract.

Furthermore, even if he does leave, PSG is not an obvious destination. Interest from the Parisian club remains unconfirmed, and the media tends to link the capital club to almost every transfer story, yet very few actually materialize. Consequently, it would not be surprising if the JJ Gabriel saga went no further regarding PSG.

That said, it is certainly possible that the Parisian club is tracking this young talent, who is described as one of the most promising prospects of his generation. It remains to be seen who might secure his signature, as other clubs may also be interested and have compelling arguments. Unsurprisingly, other European giants are being mentioned. We will have to wait for the situation to become clearer.
