Marco Asensio, Paris Saint-Germain’s 28-year-old midfielder/attacker under contract until 2026, has been struggling of late and has been rather sidelined by coach Luis Enrique. So the idea of a mercato departure is taking hold. This Friday, L’Equipe confirmed that this is indeed the idea for this winter, even if it is still difficult to close the deal.
“Several markets have been sounded out.”
“The capital club has opened the door to the Spanish striker and would like to find him a landing spot this winter. PSG want to be active during the January mercato – ideally, they’re hoping to attract two to three recruits – and they’ve targeted several elements of their squad likely to lighten the wage bill and/or give them resources. Asensio is one of them. (…) A situation that has caused some tension in recent weeks and led him to decide to consider the next move away from Paris.
Several markets have been sounded and there are leads in England and Spain, but nothing concrete for the moment. And for good reason: the main stumbling block is his salary, which is deemed excessive in relation to his current performance (€830,000 gross per month).
Part of the solution lies in what PSG will be prepared to accept – taking over part of his income, for example. Ideally, the club would like to pocket a transfer, and the possibility of Asensio joining a more exotic destination cannot be ruled out, even if this is not his priority.”
Asensio has played very little for several weeks now, even if the media have highlighted this less than for Randal Kolo Muani or Milan Skriniar. We don’t know exactly why, especially as the Spaniard seemed to have established himself more. But he clearly disappointed coach Luis Enrique, and other players moved up the pecking order.
In any case, a departure would clearly make sense for both the player and PSG. The difficulty would be to find a way out. An effort may be required, whether from the club, the Spaniard or both. Let’s wait and see for the moment, nothing can be taken for granted.
It remains to be seen whether a concrete possibility will emerge for Asensio.
