Marco Asensio, Paris Saint-Germain’s 29-year-old midfielder/attacker under contract until 2026, has been struggling of late and has been rather sidelined by coach Luis Enrique. So the idea of a mercato departure took hold, and he is now on loan at Aston Villa. The transfer was made official today.
It’s good to see that Asensio has an interesting way out, with great things to play for in the Premier League and Champions League. He’s a fine player, but has struggled to find consistency since a serious injury at Real Madrid. Sometimes very good at PSG, the Spaniard hasn’t been able to confirm his form.
We hope he’ll be able to follow this up with playing time and great performances. This will open up some great opportunities for him next summer, whether to stay at Aston Villa or perhaps discover another club. Possibly another chance at PSG, but that would be rather surprising. In the meantime, Paris is parting with a substantial salary and a player who no longer fits into coach Luis Enrique’s “squad”.
