Didier Descamps, the French national team coach who will step down after the 2026 World Cup, spoke at length to Le Parisien in an interview published this Friday morning. The interview was an opportunity to answer a question about a possible future with Paris Saint-Germain.
Deschamps “I’m not closing any doors”.
“I’m not closing any doors, I’ll be available. But I don’t have anything in mind at the moment. Depending on what’s offered, I’ll choose. I’m not forbidding myself anything. I’m not set on anything specific. I don’t know and I don’t want to know what my future holds.
I’m not worried about that. As I said before, I’m not closing any doors other than that of another selection, unless I change my mind. But I’d be very surprised.”
It’s the subtle communication we see so often at the top level. Deschamps does not claim to want to sign for PSG one day, but there is no question of putting off this option should it ever arise. That’s enough to avoid any difficulties afterwards.
There’s also undoubtedly an element of honesty. Deschamps is coming off a great spell with the French national team, and it’s not over yet. It’s too early to decide what to do next. First of all, he needs to finish well with Les Bleus, then take the time to breathe and evaluate his options.
And let’s not forget that PSG may not be an option, or not for a long time. Coach Luis Enrique is currently very much part of the project, and Deschamps would not necessarily be one of the first options to replace him.
