Thiago Scuro, General Manager of AS Monaco, spoke to L’Equipe newspaper in an interview published on Monday. In particular, he was asked about the gap in Ligue 1 between 4th-placed Monaco and 1st-placed Paris Saint-Germain. The 16 points between them have a simple explanation, according to him: the level of PSG.
Scuro “to compete with them would have been very ambitious.”
Do you understand the disappointment on the outside that you couldn’t keep up with PSG for much longer?
This is without doubt the best PSG has ever had, with clear concepts and no defeats in L1. Given our budget and the make-up of our squad, competing with them would have been very ambitious. Marseille also had a good season, with major investments over the summer and winter. They’ve taken on experienced players, and they don’t have to play in European competitions like we did last year. It’s more comfortable.”
Careful before attempting a debate around Scuro’s strongest-ever PSG announcement. It’s very strong collectively at the moment, but there have been other great teams with immense talent. Above all, the Monegasque manager may exaggerate a little in order to defend his club. We shouldn’t forget this point.
However, he is also right to point out that AS Monaco could hardly keep up with Paris this season. There’s a clear gap between the two sides, and the Parisians have also built up their team spirit to help individual players shine.
The race with OM is more possible, even if the Marseillais have the advantage of not playing in Europe this season.
