Kylian Mbappé, the 26-year-old France forward, is now at Real Madrid following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain. However, not everything has yet been settled between the player and the club where he spent 7 years. The French international is in financial dispute with Paris over unpaid wages and bonuses, despite PSG’s belief that an agreement had been reached. This Wednesday, the player’s lawyer, Delphine Verheyden, spoke to Agence France Presse (relayed by RMC Sport and L’Equipe). She referred to the absence of a signed rider, rendering any agreement null and void. She calls PSG to account.
Verheyden “Football regulations also require that this amendment be approved within 15 days of its signature”.
“In labor law, the law requires that a rider be signed to modify the remuneration or duration of a contract. Soccer regulations also require this amendment to be approved within 15 days of signature. If this does not happen, soccer regulations stipulate that all discussions are null and void.
Verheyden: “We’re not dealing with an honor division club that hasn’t mastered the rules”.
I think PSG is using magical thinking. That’s what you do when you say to yourself: “If I believe very, very, very hard, it will happen”. And we’re not up against an honor division club that hasn’t mastered the rules.
Verheyden “The third third of the signing bonus is missing”.
The third third of the signing bonus is missing, which corresponds in gross terms to 36.66 million euros. Then April, May, June, no salary and no ethics bonus. So, we’re missing 18.75 million euros in salary, which brings us to the famous 55 million euros.”
Why are we still here? It’s about time the club eased up and paid what it owes. It’s clear that Mbappé no longer wants to hear about his verbal agreement, and there was (presumably) no written legal agreement. The story should end there, with PSG paying up and moving on. It’s the club that gave the player a golden bridge, so it has to take responsibility.
We know the character, Mbappé and his clan are “tough” on business and Paris thought it could buy him. Instead, the player took one last big check and walked away. His words about his ordeal last year show that the player has been preparing the ground for weeks to show that he’s in the right, that he’s suffered and that he won’t make any concessions. PSG must say stop and pay what they owe.
