On Wednesday, as part of the Ligue 1 2024-2025 round of 16 (return on Tuesday March 11), Paris Saint-Germain take on Liverpool at the Parc des Princes (kick-off 9pm, UTC+1). On the eve of this encounter, Paris coach Luis Enrique answered a number of questions at a press conference.
Neves “We always play the same way, no matter what the score is. That’s what it takes.”
How do you prepare for Liverpool in this schedule?
We don’t have much time to prepare and recover before the next match. But we have all the staff and very good conditions to get ready. Training is also adapted.
What do you think of Liverpool? Have they been the strongest team in Europe so far this season?
They’re a very good team, they finished first in the Champions League. They have great strengths, and we have to avoid conceding goals early in the game. We have our strengths too, and I’m happy with the way we’re playing. We always play the same way, whatever the score. That’s what we need.
Neves “We’ve got a lot of energy, we’re on a good run.”
You were in trouble against Arsenal, how can you be convinced that you’ve made progress?
I think we’re getting better every day. At the start of the Champions League, things were a bit complicated for us. But that’s not because we weren’t playing well. We weren’t bad, we just missed goals. Unlike now.
I think we’re playing really well, every game with the same rhythm and the same quality of play. We’ve got a lot of energy and we’re on a good run. We haven’t lost in what, 4 months? It’s great for us, it gives us confidence.
What has Luis Enrique brought you? Have you grown in stature at PSG?
One of the reasons I came to Paris was because I really liked the idea of playing with Luis Enrique. His strategy is the best way to win, and we apply what he says. If you believe in the game, it’s easier.
Neves “The best way to defend against these players is to have the ball.”
How do you tackle Liverpool’s physically stronger midfield?
The best way to defend against these players is to have the ball. It’s one of our qualities to have the ball, our strategy. We’re going to do our best to move the ball around and produce quality soccer.
How do you defend against Salah?
As I said, by cutting off possession. You have to keep as much possession as possible. They have quality players, like us. It’s a team sport and I think we’re better at it.
How do you get on with Vitinha?
Vitinha is a really good guy. We have a really good relationship on and off the pitch. He’s helped me a lot. I’m happy with that relationship. Before, especially with the national team, I was mostly the new kid on the block. I had to really fit in.
Neves “I don’t care if the opponent is bigger or stronger. I always do my best.”
How would you describe your role at PSG with Luis Enrique?
I just try to do my best every day here in Paris. After that, the coach decides. We have 17-18 players and we all want to start. We’re concentrating on being ready.
Where does your fighting spirit come from? Will that be a key factor tomorrow?
I think it comes from my parents, who always told me to do my best and give it my all. I don’t care if the opponent is bigger or stronger. I always do my best.
As for fighting spirit, that will be key. Every detail, every duel will count to make the difference.
Neves “I try to be intelligent and adapt to the situation.”
How do you prepare? Do you have a ritual?
I prepare as I do for every match. The most important match is always the next one. It doesn’t matter who the opponent is or what the competition is. You always have to do your best and fight for every match. That can make all the difference.
What’s your secret when it comes to headers?
Size is an advantage of course, but you have to find other things. I try to be intelligent and adapt to the situation.
Neves “We’re lucky to have him.”
How do you see the club developing? Where do you see your personal development going?
We all have the same objective: to do our best. We have to make the most of our abilities as players. We all have strengths and weaknesses, but we’re moving forward together and growing. I think we’re in the best shape we’ve ever been in.
Do you have any qualities you haven’t yet seen in Paris?
We’re still doing the same things, but better at the moment. We’re training as hard as we can, and the staff are showing us what we can do better.
Did Kvaratskhelia talk to you about Liverpool after playing against them 3 years ago?
He’s a great guy and a very good player. We’re lucky to have him.
