On Tuesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain won on penalties (1-1 on aggregate, then 1-4 on penalties, Liverpool/PSG video highlights) against Liverpool in the second leg of the Champions League 2024-2025 Round of 16 at Anfield. Here we present you with our top and bottom stories.
Tops –
A legendary qualification
We had seen that PSG had sown a seed of hope, and in a difficult match at Anfield, Luis Enrique’s men produced a great performance against a great team. A victory in the match, a victory in the penalty shoot-out and a valiant team, from forwards to defenders. A rare emotion for a team that has taken this step and won against a big team.
Donnarumma
A great match overall, he took the lead in the air. He did his defence a world of good. On his line, he was impeccable and in the penalty shoot-out, he finished as a hero. Although he was criticized last Wednesday, he made his team win, he’s going to sleep well and, above all, he showed that he’s a great goalkeeper, not perfect, but he’s got heart.
Dembélé
You could see the rage in his eyes. His tone has clearly changed this season. He’s more direct, more involved, he communicates a lot with his emotions. He scores again, in a great match, which validates his great recent series. He took his penalty and we saw how motivated he was, and his celebrations showed that he really wanted to go further and chase the dream.
Flops –
Ruiz
He didn’t lose out, but you have to find a negative point. In a big, intense match, he was the worst player in the game. He fought hard and wasn’t a liability, but he didn’t add any value.
More offensive garbage
Maybe this team didn’t really know they could do it. All in all, they could have scored more goals. This time it was enough, but they’ll need to score in their next big games. Barcola and Dembélé had goals at their feet, and in the Champions League you always have to be efficient. Fortunately, one goal was enough, thanks to a fine defensive display.
