The CIES Football Observatory, renowned for its player performance indices, has published a ranking of the world’s 100 best-performing goalkeepers over the past year. At the top of the list is Gianluigi Donnarumma, the 26-year-old goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain.

“The 499th Weekly Letter presents the world’s 100 best-performing goalkeepers over the past year, according to an index on a scale of 100 specifically devised by the CIES* Football Observatory. The top three are Paris St-Germain’s Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma, Inter’s Swiss Yann Sommer, and Real Madrid’s Belgian Thibaut Courtois.”

Although he can be frustrating at times, and can be improved on in a number of areas, it has to be said that Donnarumma is a top-class goalkeeper who makes a difference more often than not. Unloved and criticized, he remains a goalkeeper of unparalleled talent, particularly on his line.
This ranking highlights what he represents in soccer. Of course, you also have to look at the statistics in which he doesn’t shine. Nevertheless, being number one in the “saves” category is a good base for a goalkeeper.
