At 26, Gianluigi Donnarumma, now the goalkeeper for Manchester City, spoke to L’Équipe about his time at Paris Saint-Germain. Proud of his achievements with Paris, including winning the Champions League, the Italian international believes his time with the Parisian club ended “on a good note,” despite his departure.
Donnarumma: “I have no regrets about all those years I spent in Paris”
“And with Paris Saint-Germain, was it also a love story?
Yes, a beautiful story, an important chapter in my career. Now, I’m starting a new phase of my life, and I’m happy about that.
You know what they say: love stories usually don’t end well…
For me, it ended well. I have no regrets about all those years I spent in Paris. I’m proud of what I achieved, of what we achieved together. It was a difficult but wonderful journey. We won many trophies, culminating in the Champions League title, so I’m really happy with what I accomplished in Paris.
Donnarumma: “Everyone makes their own choices. Paris will always be in my heart”
How did you experience it, how did you feel? Was there sadness, anger, a feeling of injustice?
No, as I already said, I’m happy with what I achieved. Everyone makes their own choices. Paris will always be in my heart, because the fans gave me so much, the club gave me so much. It was a very beautiful adventure. Now, I’m turning the page. I’m at Manchester City, and I’m proud to be here. I want to make my mark on this club’s history, win many titles, give my all, and leave everything I have on the pitch.”
Gianluigi Donnarumma has never stopped cultivating a special bond with the Paris Saint-Germain supporters. Despite some initial criticism, the Italian goalkeeper won over the fans with his decisive performances and his genuine attitude towards the supporters at the Parc des Princes.
Right up until his final match, the encouragement from the stands meant a great deal to him, and he made a point of emphasizing how much that recognition meant to him.
In leaving, he leaves behind not only the memory of a reliable goalkeeper, but also that of a player who respected the club and its fans. His saves in key matches, his role in winning the Champions League—all of this has left an undeniable mark. The question remains: is this strong and emotional legacy enough to place Donnarumma among the legends of PSG?
