Matvey Safonov, the 26-year-old goalkeeper who arrived at Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 from Krasnodar, spoke via Telegram about his season at PSG and his role as number 2 behind Gianluigi Donnarumma (26).
“It was an excellent first season in Europe, trophies, strong emotions, new encounters and immense experience. Of course, I’d like to have more playing time and that’s exactly what I myself can influence with my work.”
Since signing, Safonov has been very frank about this competition. He doesn’t want to be a long-term understudy. But he has never complained, even though Donnarumma is now clearly ahead of him in the pecking order.
Interestingly, the Russian never blamed coach Luis Enrique. Instead, Safonov stresses that it’s up to him to win the starting berth, with hard work and performances. One can only appreciate such a mentality. Nor does he forget to point out that he was able to experience great things at PSG.
Of course, we suspect that he could end up getting bored if he doesn’t manage to impose himself further. A departure could be on the cards. But that’s not the trend for this summer, at the moment.
