Gianluigi Donnarumma, the 26-year-old goalkeeper who joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 on a contract until 2026 (following the end of his contract with AC Milan), is at the center of rumors. His contract extension has not been finalized, and there is talk of him leaving, with Lucas Chevalier (23, Lille and French national team) set to replace him. Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday that a surprise outcome is emerging.
It is always difficult to imagine real competition between goalkeepers, even if it has worked in a few clubs. At PSG, the trials have been unconvincing. Even though there was talk of competition with Matvey Safonov (26), the latter seemed to be starting from a long way behind. No one is thinking about his situation today.
It would be closer with Chevalier. Perhaps that’s for the best, as we know that coach Luis Enrique relies on competition in all positions. The goalkeeper position is unique, as it is largely based on confidence. But if everyone accepts it and feels ready, PSG could be very well equipped. This would be for one season, before Donnarumma’s very likely departure. Leaving more room for Chevalier, if he proves himself.
