Gianluigi Donnarumma, 26-year-old Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper (contract until 2026), was the focus of rumors this summer, with talks of a contract extension ultimately stalling and the arrival of Lucas Chevalier (23, French national team) from Lille to replace him. He found a very attractive exit with Manchester City. The transfer was made official this Monday, the last of the transfer window.
It’s a remarkable departure, a real surprise if you think back to a few months ago… And less so for some, last January. Donnarumma has experienced ups and downs at PSG, with periods of intense criticism (such as after the elimination against Real Madrid, when he lost the ball to Karim Benzema, even though the referee could have called a foul). During the winter, some called for his departure, particularly considering Chevalier as his replacement.
Paris made this choice for technical reasons highlighted by coach Luis Enrique (his kicking ability and ability to come off the line are just some of the reasons). Negotiations over a contract extension may have also played a role. But between the criticism and this departure, Donnarumma made some decisive saves in the Champions League, helping him to a historic victory.
We can only thank him for his time at the club, which he leaves as a legend, perhaps a little misunderstood at times. We hope he thrives at Manchester City, while PSG will now rely on Chevalier.
As a reminder, Donnarumma’s transfer to the Premier League is announced in the media at around 30-35 million euros fixed and bonuses of a few million.
