The South American qualifying match between Paraguay and Ecuador (0-0) may not have produced any goals, but it highlighted a remarkable defensive performance by 23-year-old Willian Pacho. The Paris Saint-Germain center back, a regular starter for the Ecuadorian national team, shone with his composure and accuracy in possession, further solidifying his status as a key player.

Solid defensive statistics

Statistically, Pacho delivered an almost flawless performance. With 66 successful passes out of 69 (96%), he was a vital cog in Ecuador’s build-up play. His ability to break through Paraguay’s pressing and find his midfielders relieved the pressure on his team in crucial moments.

His impact was also evident in the final third: 2 successful passes in the attacking zone (100%) and 4 successful long passes out of 6 (67%), demonstrating his willingness to play vertical passes. Even better, he created one scoring opportunity (0.04 expected assists), a rare feat for a center back.

Defensively, Pacho won 7 of 15 duels (47%), a respectable figure, but below his usual standards. However, he compensated with impeccable positioning and several key interceptions, preventing Paraguay from finding space in the center of the defense.

Analysis of his influence

Against a determined Paraguay side, buoyed by the energy of their attackers, Pacho once again demonstrated his maturity and tactical awareness. His passing accuracy, combined with his composure under pressure, allowed Ecuador to maintain a clean sheet.

His partnership with Piero Hincapié proved its strength once again: the two defenders formed a solid defensive unit, leaving very little space for the opposition to exploit.

Conclusion

Even without a victory, Ecuador can be satisfied with Pacho’s performance, which establishes him as one of the leaders of their defense. For PSG, this is an encouraging sign: defensive solidity also comes from having reliable, consistent, and composed players, exactly what the Ecuadorian defender demonstrated that evening.

Key stats for Willian Pacho against Paraguay:

66/69 passes completed (96%)

2 passes completed in the final third (100%)

4/6 long passes completed (67%)

0.04 expected assists (xA)

7/15 duels won (47%)
