Gianluigi Donnarumma, Manchester City and Italy’s 26-year-old goalkeeper, spoke briefly to La Chaîne L’Équipe on Sunday evening on the sidelines of the Ballon d’Or ceremony. It was an opportunity for him to express how highly he still regards Paris Saint-Germain, the club he left this summer after four years in the French capital.
Donnarumma: “I have an extraordinary relationship with them and with all of PSG.”
“Coming back here to Paris is a great pleasure for me. For four years it was my home, and it’s always a pleasure to come back. I left everything here; I gave everything for this shirt, for Paris. Thank you to the fans for their support — I lacked nothing. It’s always a pleasure to see my former teammates; I have an extraordinary relationship with them and with all of PSG.”
It’s nice to see the Italian remain so positive about PSG, despite what may have been a difficult departure. There had been talks about an extension, but in the end the Parisian club decided to move on, while the goalkeeper himself primarily wanted to stay.
There seems to be no hard feelings — at least outwardly — and that’s already something. Whatever one thinks of the club’s decision in this case (and it’s hard to have a clear view without knowing the details of the talks), the Italian will remain a legendary figure at PSG after winning his first Champions League there.
