PSG wasn’t particularly brilliant against Auxerre, but they got the job done, professionally and without any drama, and even gave some of their academy players some game time. A relatively good weekend to reclaim the top spot in Ligue 1, except for the injury to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
While Paris is currently first, it’s only on goal difference. This is thanks to Olympique Lyon, who continue their impressive run, this time with a 1-0 away win at Lille. Even if it was a tough match (14 shots to 5, 55% possession for Lille) and with another controversy surrounding the referee.
Earlier in the day, Marseille managed to salvage a difficult situation. Looking rather uninspired, they were trailing 1-0 to a stubborn Strasbourg side, but managed to turn things around late in the game for a valuable victory.
This win is all the more important as it puts them level on points with Strasbourg… and with Monaco, who had a disastrous outing in Lorient. Thilo Kehrer’s red card in the 38th minute proved costly, with Lorient scoring three goals and Monaco only managing to reduce the deficit with a late penalty from Ansu Fati. For Lorient, it’s a vital win that gives them some breathing room.
In the relegation battle, Paris FC can take heart from their draw at Nice, which confirms their adaptation to the league. For Nice, it’s a brief respite from a potential crisis. Metz and Le Havre also shared the points; not exactly cause for celebration, but they avoided the worst-case scenario.
Nantes picked up a decent point against Toulouse, as it at least allows them to move forward a little. Toulouse, meanwhile, continues to struggle and seems destined for a season without any European aspirations. They shouldn’t worry about relegation just yet, though.
