Paris Saint-Germain traveled to face AS Monaco on Saturday and lost 1-0 in Matchday 14 of Ligue 1. Speaking to PSG TV, 19-year-old midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery reflected on the defeat.
Zaïre-Emery: “They’re a physically strong team that wins its duels.”
“It was a difficult match against a good Monaco team that pressed us high up the pitch and played with a lot of intensity. They’re a physically strong team that wins its duels. It’s hard to talk about it right now, but I think that because of the pressure they applied, the gaps were in behind their defense.
Today we lacked a bit of depth and precision in our passing; there were a lot of misplaced passes. We need to move on, look ahead, and get the three points in the next match because it’s important. First, we’ll get some rest, clear our heads, and prepare for the week ahead.
A defeat that wasn’t surprising for PSG, who failed to get into the game on Saturday. After their impressive 5-3 victory against Tottenham on Wednesday in the Champions League, the Parisians have suffered a setback in the league. PSG proved too limited against a very physical Monaco side that didn’t hesitate to engage in intense duels.
In front of goal, Luis Enrique’s men were also too wasteful. With only 2 shots on target for 13 goals, it’s clear that coming back from behind was mission impossible, despite Thilo Kehrer’s late sending-off for Monaco. It’s still a painful defeat, as Lens and Olympique de Marseille have the opportunity to take the top spot on Sunday. A misstep that will therefore need to be corrected next week when Rennes are hosted at the Parc des Princes.
