Matvey Safonov, the 26-year-old Russian goalkeeper who joined Paris Saint-Germain from Krasnodar in the summer of 2024 on a contract until 2029, has been relegated to the number two role by Gianluigi Donnarumma, and then Lucas Chevalier (24). This has fueled some rumors about his departure during this transfer window. L’Equipe has dropped one such rumor today.
“According to the club, the question of a departure wasn’t even raised when his agent met with QSI sporting advisor Luis Campos a month ago at the Campus. ‘Don’t forget that we signed him for five years.'”
It’s still just a rumor, since it comes from a media outlet, but it’s nonetheless a significant blow to rumors that have never been confirmed. We remain cautious, however. Only concrete information will provide certainty. And this denial comes, coincidentally, only after a strong performance and the renewed speculation about potential competition.
It’s a situation to watch, with Chevalier and Safonov giving their all to play. Then, the coaching staff will make the final decisions. It remains to be seen how ready each player is to face this competition. It’s difficult to maintain two top-level goalkeepers long-term, as sharing the role is complicated. But, for the moment, no departures are on the horizon.
