Indeed, RC Lens, despite a scare in Nantes where they had to fight hard to capitalize on their dominance, managed to secure their place at the top of the league. This confirms their hopes for a very successful season. There are more doubts surrounding Olympique de Marseille, who stumbled again. This time, they suffered a defeat after a lackluster performance in Lille. A strong opponent who matched their intensity and added a goal to take third place from their rivals. One of the biggest upsets of the matchday.
Behind them, we saw Monaco falter after their victory against Paris, achieved with great collective energy, but perhaps not enough quality in their play. Brest took full advantage, despite a red card for Ludovic Ajorque in the 60th minute (the score had been 1-0 since the 28th minute). This will sow doubts within Monaco and allow Brest to breathe a sigh of relief.
Strasbourg also missed their chance, with the race for European qualification sometimes proving too difficult in terms of consistency. Toulouse, always capable of causing trouble, deserves praise as they close the gap on the leading group.
Sadly, the crisis continues in Nice with another defeat, this time against a good Angers side who are enjoying a promising run of form, compounded by a match interruption and a red card. It’s difficult to imagine a calming of tensions anytime soon, or a return to form on the pitch.
Nice slipped in the relegation battle, while Auxerre pulled off a major upset, rediscovering their clinical edge against Metz. This victory lifted them off the bottom of the table, though the fight for survival will be a long one. Metz, meanwhile, fell back into worry and last place after a brief resurgence. There was little satisfaction at Le Havre and Paris FC after a 0-0 draw.
To close out the weekend, Lyon stumbled at Lorient, who deserve credit given the quality they displayed. The fifth-placed side, who received a red card shortly after opening the scoring in the 39th minute, saw their hopes of reaching the top of the table dwindle. Lorient, on the other hand, gained a little more breathing room above the relegation zone.
