On Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain returned to Champions League action against Sporting Lisbon and lost 2-1 in Matchday 7 of the group stage. After the match, Luis Enrique, the club’s coach, spoke to PSG TV to discuss the result.
Enrique: “We played our best away game of the season.”
“This result is so unfair… It’s disappointing, and for me, as a coach, you have to accept all possible situations in a football match, but it’s unbelievable. For me, and I say this honestly as always, we played our best away game of the season.
We dominated our opponent at every moment, we controlled the game, we created a lot of chances. But we’re not stupid, and we know we have to score goals.” But I think we did everything we could to win this match. We were far superior, and it’s so unfair that it’s frustrating for us as a team to accept it.
Enrique: “We were far superior to our opponent.”
“That’s how it is, we have to keep going. It’s clear we need to convert the chances we had, but this result is so unfair… We have to keep going, we know how difficult this competition is. We were far superior to our opponent, and we didn’t see their true qualities, and I think we’re going to go very far in the Champions League because with this mentality and this character, I’m very proud of my players.”
A match filled with frustration for PSG, who nevertheless showed ambition and dominance. Unfortunately, football is sometimes unfair, and we have to accept it. This Tuesday, the capital club deserved the victory and was once again crushed by an opponent who proved ruthlessly efficient.
The Parisians are still going through a difficult period, as this defeat comes shortly after their elimination in the Round of 32 of the Coupe de France. They will need to recover mentally once again. As the defending champions, PSG must now react and be ruthless at home on January 28th against Newcastle.
