PSG didn’t shine in Strasbourg, but they displayed impressive collective fighting spirit, always showing the talent to extricate themselves from difficult situations. This was enough to secure a vital victory to maintain their position at the top of the league.
Lens had indeed applied pressure right from the start of the weekend with a 1-0 victory against Le Havre, who were rather toothless with only two shots on goal. Lens weren’t brilliant either, but they got the job done. A mission failed for Marseille despite opening the scoring in the 18th minute, making it 2-0 in the 53rd, and dominating the match overall. The blame lies with a collapse in the final minutes, which has reignited tensions during an already complicated period, just one week before facing PSG at the Parc des Princes.
Meanwhile, Lyon pulled off a hard-fought victory, a 1-0 win against a LOSC side that will rue their missed opportunity (Lille outshot their opponents 5-11) and now find themselves far from both the podium and fourth place, seven points adrift. Rennes also find themselves adrift after a crushing defeat against a resurgent Monaco. While climbing back up the table still looks difficult for Monaco, they can take some credit for a somewhat flattering scoreline.
Lorient, too, continues their unusual run of form. Although the Merlus are primarily focused on securing their place in the league, European qualification seems a distant prospect after a hard-fought victory against Nantes (7-9). They must savor these points to breathe a sigh of relief. Toulouse will likely have to accept that the race for European qualification is too difficult after their 0-0 draw against Auxerre, despite dominating the match.
Metz failed to capitalize on these results to climb the table, struggling in Angers after receiving a red card in the 9th minute. Angers then secured the win, further distancing themselves from the relegation zone. Finally, Nice and Brest have little to celebrate in their draws, but it’s still better than zero points.
