Among the quarter-finals of the 2025-2026 Champions League is the clash between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, just like in the round of 16 last season. While the prevailing sentiment in France is one of optimism for PSG, Emmanuel Petit, a former French international who notably played in the Premier League and is now a pundit for RMC Sport, has sought to temper expectations.
Petit: “Don’t tell me we’ve rediscovered the Paris Saint-Germain.”
“I think PSG showed incredible qualities against Chelsea, but there are still things that need refining. Especially in the space of three weeks, don’t tell me we’ve rediscovered the Paris Saint-Germain. With everything we’ve seen in the Champions League this season, I’m going to avoid making any assumptions.”
Petit’s point of view is understandable, because PSG isn’t perfect. No team is. The Parisians will need to be at their best, with continued efficiency and defensive errors eliminated, to reach the semi-finals. That’s how it is at the highest level; there’s not much room for error. Liverpool, of course, must be respected. Some are perhaps a little too confident.
However, the Reds are far from perfect, and there’s no reason for Paris to be particularly worried either. These will primarily be two great football matches, where everything can hinge on the smallest details. Petit could perhaps be a bit more positive about PSG, whom he has clearly “lost.” Even though the Parisian team’s overall level remains very high.
