PSG won the derby, a great way to end the season and prepare for the Champions League final. But it was just a small part of a special evening with some truly remarkable results.
Notably, the thrashing inflicted by Lens, who had already secured second place, on Olympique Lyonnais, who were desperate for a win to reclaim third place ahead of Lille and qualify directly for the Champions League. But it was clearly better to play without pressure, given the decisive margin. The disappointment is all the greater because Lille were surprised at home by a more clinical Auxerre side. They pulled off a major upset, but we’ll come back to that later.
Just behind the Champions League, the battle for a Europa League spot also ended with a surprising scoreline, at least in terms of the margin. It might be a bit harsh on Rennes, who caused problems in their play, but they were indeed outclassed by Olympique de Marseille. Marseille, for their part, climbed to 5th place and eased their current slump. Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Rennes, despite a strong comeback.
As for the crucial matches, Auxerre secured their survival with a win away at Lille, a real achievement, while Le Havre fulfilled their objective in Lorient with a much-needed victory after a long drought. Nice failed to turn things around, even though it wouldn’t have been enough, drawing 0-0 at home against Metz, who are already bottom of the table. Nothing encouraging ahead of the relegation playoff against Saint-Étienne.
Finally, we saw a very good match with the 4-4 draw between Strasbourg and Monaco, and a much sadder one in Nantes when the match against Toulouse was interrupted due to a pitch invasion.
