Paris Saint-Germain lost 1–0 to Lens this Sunday at the Stade Bollaert in the 2026 Trophée des Champions. Following the match, PSG head coach Luis Enrique spoke at a press conference.
Luis Enrique: “I’m happy with the intensity and what I saw, especially at this stage of the season.”
What was missing?
Finishing the attacking moves we created. In my opinion, the tempo and everything I saw during the match were very positive—especially the first half. Thinking back to recent games, I believe this is the match where Lens created the least. I’m not happy with the result, but I also think we deserved more. I have to congratulate Lens; they played very well. But, I’ll say it again: I liked what I saw.
A wake-up call?
I saw a team dominating the match, with fluid, mobile attacking play. I was pleased with what I saw. Football is incredible. They had two shots in the first half, and a mishit shot turned into an assist. They have quality players; it’s always tough. The atmosphere was amazing, but we handled it well. It might seem strange to say I’m happy, but I am—happy with the intensity and what I saw, especially at this point in the season.
In what areas was Lens better than you?
None! From what I saw during the match, we were the better side. That’s to be expected; we’re a team more accustomed to this level of play. Despite the atmosphere and their efforts—and they are a team that defends very well—we controlled the game. We can improve, of course, and create clearer chances. But in the second half, I recall two very clear opportunities for Dembélé and Mendes inside the penalty area. We played a very good match, but regarding the result, we didn’t get the luck we needed.
Luis Enrique: “I’ll talk about the transfer market once it’s closed.”
How will you use this defeat?
The important thing to remember is that winning trophies and matches—winning any game at all—is difficult. It is important to recognize and value that. I have no doubts about what the team is doing or what it is trying to improve.
You made some bold choices; we didn’t see Barcola or Mbaye. Does this signal a departure?
I will speak about the transfer window once it has closed.
