Due to an unplayable pitch at the Parc des Princes, the Matchday 1 fixture of the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season between Paris Saint-Germain and Rennes had to be relocated just days before the game. It will ultimately take place at Roazhon Park, Rennes’ home stadium. Now, the question arises regarding the return fixture, scheduled for the weekend of March 6 (Matchday 23). The Breton club would like to host that match at home as well, whereas PSG would prefer to host it at the Parc des Princes—essentially swapping the venues. L’Equipe has reported on the situation, highlighting the heatwave as a central factor.

“Paris reportedly would not have opposed postponing this Matchday 1 fixture.”

After realizing that no alternative stadium was available—since the pitches at Jean-Bouin and Charléty were not ready and the Stade de France was set up for a concert—PSG turned to the LFP. The league asked Stade Rennais if they would agree to swap the venues. PSG emphasizes that Rennes had a choice and could have refused, noting that Paris would not have objected to postponing the Matchday 1 game.

“The Parisian club considers the heatwave an exceptional circumstance.”

By sharing responsibility for the venue swap with the Breton club, PSG is also laying the groundwork for the return match’s location. LFP regulations stipulate that the return match must take place at the originally scheduled venue, barring “exceptional circumstances.” The Parisian club maintains that the heatwave constitutes an exceptional circumstance and argues that, in the interest of fairness toward other Ligue 1 clubs, there is no reason for Rennes to play an extra home game. “heatwaves—a constant summer phenomenon regularly forecast by meteorologists”

Clearly, two opposing views will clash over this issue: for its part, the Breton club will argue that while a thunderstorm or a flood might be considered an exceptional circumstance, a heatwave—a constant summer phenomenon regularly forecast by meteorologists—actually points to a lack of foresight on the part of the Parisian club.

When the change of venue for this Sunday was announced, the initial emphasis was on the fair play and solidarity within French football in finding a quick solution to an exceptional problem. That sentiment has somewhat soured today with the launch of this new dispute. It seems further tension within French football will be required to resolve the matter.

Rennes is therefore seeking to play both matches against PSG at home, effectively giving them one more “home” game over the season than any other club. The sporting and financial advantages are obvious. While some suggest the stadium might not be full this Sunday, we have our doubts. Paris will now look to ensure the PSG vs. Rennes match takes place at some point during the season.

The argument regarding how heatwaves are classified seems almost absurd. Will we see the same approach applied to heavy rain or frozen pitches—events that also recur regularly? It is hard to imagine French football ever maturing as long as it remains divided by such battles.
