Speaking at a press conference ahead of Spain’s Nations League match against Croatia on Tuesday evening (a 4-1 victory), Fabián Ruiz was asked about the possibility of winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or. The 30-year-old Paris Saint-Germain and La Roja midfielder was quite clear on the matter.
Ruiz: “It’s not about campaigning; it’s about having your work recognized.”
“Can I win the Ballon d’Or?
It’s not about campaigning; it’s about having your work recognized. We all like to be recognized for our work. It was an exceptional season for me. I was fortunate enough to win the most prestigious competition—the World Cup—as well as another Champions League title; these are the most important competitions. It’s always gratifying to have your work acknowledged.”
Ruiz has no intention of putting himself in the spotlight the way Lamine Yamal or Kylian Mbappé might; that doesn’t suit his personality—or his style of play. His talent lies in highlighting the team and helping it win. His role often goes underappreciated, so it is fair for him to point out his achievements.
Winning the biggest titles—including his remarkable 50-game unbeaten run with Spain—is no coincidence. Individual performance plays a role within the collective effort. It is no accident that he has established himself as a starter for both PSG and the national team, despite fierce competition, and that he keeps winning. Hopefully, this will be duly recognized.
Of course, winning the Ballon d’Or cannot be guaranteed given the stiff competition. One shouldn’t become obsessed with a trophy that is less significant than the titles won with the team. But it must be gratifying to receive a certain level of “recognition.” We therefore hope to see Ruiz ranked at least very high up.
