Currently on loan from Paris Saint-Germain to Espanyol Barcelona, Gabriel Moscardo—a 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder—knows exactly what he needs to achieve to earn a return to Paris. In an interview with Sport, he explains how his move to Spain came about and outlines Luis Enrique’s expectations for the season.
Moscardo: “Spain would be ideal”
“Before I joined Espanyol, Luis Enrique had let Luis Campos know that he wanted me to go out on loan to a club playing in a major league. Luis Campos told me that Spain would be the ideal destination. That’s where Monchi stepped in, and the opportunity with Espanyol arose.”
Moscardo views this loan as a move planned in coordination with PSG. It is an encouraging sign for him: Paris wants to assess his progress in a top-tier league, with the aim of seeing him secure a genuine role in the squad. Now, the challenge is to turn this opportunity into a successful season. The choice of destination provides the framework; his performances will determine what happens next.
Moscardo: “I think I can return to PSG”
“Well, to be a key player. That’s actually what Luis Enrique told me: he said I needed to be a key player, play more matches, be a starter, rack up playing time…”
“If all that happens—and if I score goals, too—I think I can return to PSG and also get into the Brazilian national team. I have to focus on that: being a starter and scoring goals. That’s what I need to do.”
The goal is ambitious, and Moscardo deserves credit for stating it clearly. According to his account, Luis Enrique primarily expects him to play frequently and become an important figure at Espanyol. The midfielder adds his desire to score and earn a recall to the Brazilian national team to this agenda. Nothing guarantees him a spot at PSG just yet, but he knows what improvements he wants to demonstrate on the pitch.
