Since arriving at Paris Saint-Germain from Krasnodar in 2024, 27-year-old goalkeeper Matvei Safonov has made tremendous strides. In an interview to Vpiska, the Russian shot-stopper discussed his development, particularly under the guidance of coach Luis Enrique.
Safonov: “That’s what real professional sport is all about.”
“He brought a different approach, vision, and mentality. That’s what real professional sport is all about. At Krasnodar, we used to practice restarts, but with my current team, you simply follow the coach’s instructions. There’s no need to waste training time on that.”
“I’ve said many times that my move to PSG likely had a mission behind it. I think I’ve accomplished it—or perhaps I’m still fulfilling it: showing that anything is possible. You can go from the Krasnodar academy to big clubs and the Champions League.”
Safonov has shown immense room for growth over the past two years. He also had to establish himself in a pecking order where Gianluigi Donnarumma was the undisputed starter. Luis Enrique gave him opportunities on several occasions—both to build his confidence and to assess his level. The Russian goalkeeper quickly managed to make his mark and earn the appreciation of his teammates.
His presence allowed him to assert himself within the defense and provide an extra dimension that Gianluigi Donnarumma did not offer. He has been rewarded with titles and standout performances in key matches. Now the number one, he continues to progress while adding to his trophy collection.
