Edinson Cavani, the Uruguayan icon of Paris Saint-Germain, opened up in an exclusive interview with So Foot. In the interview, he shares his key memories of his time with the club, evoking the passion of the Parisian fans and his relationship with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Cavani “I defended this jersey as if I’d been a hincha”.
“I’ve defended this shirt as if I’d been a hincha (supporter) of this club all my life. Passion exists in Paris. I’ve seen videos of the Parc des Princes from 20 years ago: that was passion!
Cavani “As soon as I arrived, people wanted to pit us against each other”.
On his cohabitation with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his positioning on the left
I never thought about taking his place. I was concentrating on what I had to do as a winger,” he insists. But a lot of myths have been created around that. As soon as I arrived, people wanted to pit us against each other.
We have different personalities, but this antagonism doesn’t exist. I had my role in the team, and Zlatan was a team-mate whom I respected, with his own way of being.”
Cavani has never cheated in his time at PSG. He had the clumsiness to refuse to play in the Final 8 in 2020, when other players in the same situation stayed (Thiago Silva). We regret that he put his differences with the club in the balance with what he could experience with his team-mates.
That said, Cavani has always been a lone wolf. He’ll always be remembered as one of PSG’s key players of the 2010 decade, having shown at every match that he was a fighter, that he played for the colors without getting lost in futile polemics.
Cavani was a great goalscorer with average technique. His industriousness often compensated for weaknesses in his game. It’s clear from his interview that he’s not here to sensationalize, he says things from the heart.
He’s very different from Ibrahimovic, but the two have largely coexisted for the good of PSG, which is also proof that the Uruguayan’s professionalism was above and beyond what we often see in clubs between great players.
