Despite the skeptics and critics, the first Club World Cup this summer was generally a success, at least financially. Preparations are now underway for the next edition in 2029, and the choice of host country is taking shape, according to ESPN. The sports media outlet adds that Real Madrid and other clubs would like the competition to be played every 2 years, rather than 4.
“FIFA sees this as an impossibility.”
Real Madrid and several other clubs in Europe and South America are in favor of holding the revamped Club World Cup every two years to increase their revenue, but FIFA sees this as an impossibility, various sources told ESPN.
There has been no official request so far but the sources add that during the recent tournament in the United States, executives from several major clubs discussed this possibility with FIFA representatives.
“Qatar is said to be one of the potential candidates to host the tournament.”
Sources told ESPN that FIFA is working on the idea of organising another Club World Cup in 2029.
The source told ESPN that Qatar would be one of the potential candidate countries to host this tournament.
However, the calendar works against them as it would have to be played in December due to the hot weather.”
It’s a generally reliable medium, so we trust it to believe that these discussions do indeed exist. In any case, it should come as no surprise that clubs are trying to generate even more revenue by adding matches.
As for the Club World Cup, however, this seems very difficult (at best) to implement. Simply because the summers are already very busy, and the players need to be given a break at some point to avoid a health-damaging overload. As well as the “show”, which counts towards revenue. Be careful, though, as we’ve already seen that the thinking can go in the direction of revenue.
As for the host country in 2029, it has not yet been decided, but Qatar could be an idea. It now has a certain place in world soccer and organized the (classic) World Cup in 2022. But there is the worry of a completely altered European calendar.
However, countries in America have to adapt to major competitions during the summer. This can be seen as a way of “spinning out” complications. And let’s not forget that the 2022 World Cup may well have been played, and the rest of the season too.
