Paris Saint-Germain took on Chelsea this Sunday in the Club World Cup (3-0 highlights Chelsea/PSG). On the sidelines of the match, Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique spoke to PSG TV about the defeat.
Enrique “Chelsea played very well and deserved the win.”
“We played a very good competition but, in the end, we didn’t win the trophy. We’re sad, it’s difficult, but that’s top-level sport, that’s life, you have to accept it. I think if we talk about the match, Chelsea played very well and deserved to win. We have to accept that. It’s time to finish the season. It’s been a very long one, and it’s time to enjoy the vacations.”
Enrique “this connection between the fans and the team is very strong.”
“As usual, again today our fans supported us even though it was difficult for us. They do it all the time, every moment. I think this connection between the fans and the team is very strong. I hope to do even better in the future, that will be the goal.”
After seven months in the competition, PSG bowed out of the Club World Cup final. A bitter defeat, as it would have been magnificent to end the season with a quintuple. But it was also a logical defeat, given the fatigue accumulated by some of the players. The absence of Pacho in defence was also heavily felt and cost the Parisians dearly.
On several counts, then, there are no regrets to be had after this defeat. PSG are not invincible and reminded us that, despite their Champions League success, they are still a club under construction. The club from La Capitale already achieved this feat on May 31. All that remains now is to get some rest before attempting to win a second European Cup against Tottenham in the European Supercup on August 13.
