As the winner of the 2025 Ballon d’Or, 27-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé has also experienced the downsides of the award. Speaking to L’Équipe, the Parisian forward—who is also a favorite for the 2026 edition—discussed the matter, highlighting the significantly heavier criticism he has faced since his victory in September 2025.
Dembélé: “When you’re a Ballon d’Or winner, you have to play well in every match.”
What has been the biggest change in your life since winning the Ballon d’Or?
“Not much; there’s just more criticism because you’re a Ballon d’Or winner. But hey, that’s part of the game.”
Is it really fair to criticize a Ballon d’Or winner?
“Well, yes, obviously. Just because you win that trophy doesn’t mean you’re immune. Not at all.”
Do you think that’s fair?
“Do you want me to be honest? Personally, I couldn’t care less. There will always be criticism in football. Even more so when you’re a Ballon d’Or winner. Every move you make is scrutinized. But it doesn’t bother me. When you’re a Ballon d’Or winner, you have to play well in every match. You aren’t allowed to make mistakes. It’s funny, really. But personally, it doesn’t change a thing.”
