Paris Saint-Germain has been the center of attention in recent hours after deciding to bench Gianluigi Donnarumma (26-year-old goalkeeper) for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup match against Tottenham. This move, intended to encourage the goalkeeper—whose contract expires in June 2026—to leave, has not been well received by everyone. It has even gone down very badly with Italian coach Gennaro Gattuso, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Gazzetta: Nazionale coach Gennaro Gattuso is angry after PSG’s decision regarding Gigio Donnarumma. For him, the goalkeeper is not up for debate and remains a key player for Italy. Rino will be in Udine for Wednesday’s final and he will certainly not want to meet Luis Enrique.”
It’s easy to imagine that Gattuso is not happy to see his team’s starting goalkeeper in such a situation. The Italian press was bound to react, even though it has never had any difficulty criticizing the Parisian goalkeeper for the slightest hiccup in his performance.
There is no need to dramatize the situation at this point. Italy’s matches, with the break coming up in early September, are not yet threatened. Donnarumma still has time to find a club. His situation should easily attract offers. At least Paris has been clear in its position. And, according to several media outlets, the goalkeeper had been well informed of the club’s plans, as negotiations for an extension had been stalled for some time.
