Fabian Ruiz, the 30-year-old Paris Saint-Germain midfielder and 2026 World Cup winner with Spain, answered questions from Téléfoot in an interview set to air in full this Sunday. A clip has already been shared, featuring the PSG player discussing the possibility of winning the Ballon d’Or in October.
Ruiz: “It’s a dream for any footballer”
I think it’s a dream for any footballer to be recognized individually for all their hard work over the course of a season—or several seasons in a row. I’ve been lucky enough to win plenty of team trophies, though not many individual ones; still, why not dream this year of coming as close as possible to lifting that trophy? It’s something truly special. “It would be an honor for me to lift the Ballon d’Or.”
Without getting ahead of himself, Ruiz makes no secret of the fact that he allows himself to dream of the Ballon d’Or. It is a magnificent accolade for a footballer, even if the team effort always comes first. Indeed, the Spanish midfielder has just enjoyed an exceptional season, highlighted by the Champions League and the World Cup—achievements that give him reason to hope he is well-positioned for the award.
However, competition will be fierce—both within PSG and from other teams. Everyone has their own preferences, and the vote promises to be a tight contest this year. Ruiz remains very cautious, however; he has no intention of declaring himself a top contender or turning it into an obsession. Still, there is room for a glimmer of hope, and the PSG midfielder would certainly savor the moment.
