Ibrahim Mbaye, the 18-year-old Paris Saint-Germain striker, came on as a substitute for Senegal on Tuesday night in their 3-1 defeat against France (video highlights France/Senegal). It was a remarkable performance, including a beautiful goal, which secured his place in World Cup history. He is now close to becoming the youngest goalscorer and the top-scoring African player, as reported by Le Parisien.

“The youngest African goalscorer in the World Cup”

“Mbaye made history in the competition by becoming the youngest African goalscorer in the World Cup, at the age of 18 years and 142 days. Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o had to wait until he was 21, despite participating in the 1998 World Cup at 17. Nigerian Julius Aghahowa was 20 when he scored his first goal in 2002.

“He is ahead of big names like Lionel Messi, Jude Bellingham, and Kylian Mbappé.”

Ibrahim Mbaye also makes it into the ranking of the youngest goalscorers in World Cup history, across all nations. He is in 4th place, behind Pelé (17 years and 239 days), Manuel Rosas (18 years and 93 days), and Gavi (18 years and 110 days). He is ahead of However, big names like Lionel Messi, Jude Bellingham, and Kylian Mbappé are also in the mix.

This is a tremendous achievement for Mbaye, who continues to shine for the national team after a very successful Africa Cup of Nations last winter. At PSG, his playing time and performances have been more inconsistent, but his potential is undeniable, and we suspect the Parisian staff will be paying close attention to his World Cup performance. Especially after such a strong debut.

To etch his name in World Cup history like this is far from insignificant. He’s rubbing shoulders with some of the best players in football, which should give him a significant confidence boost for the future. We hope he can make the most of this opportunity, even though nothing is ever guaranteed. We also hope he helps his national team against Norway in the next match, where they will need to pick up points quickly.
