Paris Saint-Germain beat Lens on penalties (1-1 in normal time) this Sunday at Stade Bollaert in the round of 32 of the Coupe de France 2024-2025. After the match, 25-year-old goalkeeper Matvey Safonov spoke to PSG TV.
Safonov “we won and I’m happy”.
“Today everyone is happy and that’s normal. It was a match with a lot of emotions, a very difficult match because our opponent played well today. We had some difficult moments, but we won and I’m happy.
I think at one point I was lucky because my hand save was helped by the bar. At the time, I thought I’d conceded a goal, but I was lucky. It was also an emotional moment.”
Safonov put in a very fine performance on Sunday, and in particular took qualification to PSG by making two saves in the penalty shootout. This match was a challenge in advance for Luis Enrique’s men. Facing a Ligue 1 side in an away French Cup match during this period is a real difficulty.
This qualification is therefore a great way to end the year on a high note and focus calmly on what’s to come. The month of January is already shaping up to be a busy one, and PSG’s players will be attacking the start of the year with the return of the Champions League. There’s really no time for rest, which is why it’s important to make the most of these few days’ break, before getting down to business.
