Paris Saint-Germain took on Lens at Stade Bollaert on Saturday, as part of the 18th day of Ligue 1 2024-2025. Lens coach Will Still spoke at a press conference after the Parisians’ 1-2 victory. He spoke of a very frustrating result due to errors, despite his team’s ability to dominate.
Still “You have to hurt a team when you’re dominant, and we don’t do that enough.”
“You’re in control for almost the whole game. You make one mistake, whether it’s a foul or not, I don’t know. And then you make a second mistake. Except that when opponents make mistakes, we don’t kill them. And they kill us. So I think that’s where the difference lies. It’s a question of quality, a question of realism.
We can talk about it for hours. It’s fine to talk, it’s fine to say that there’s potential, and so on. But there comes a time when you have to take it to the next level. You have to hurt a team when you’re dominant, and we don’t do that enough. Or not often enough. So I think we’ve been saying it for weeks, but we’re where we need to be if you’re not able to do… or avoid those little mistakes that cost you dearly”, comments relayed by L’Equipe.
It was understandably frustrating for me, the Lens coach, who saw his team fail to take any points after leading and dominating for part of the match. Which is inevitably a little bit to blame, with mistakes at the end of actions and in defence.
But there was also PSG, who were able to wake up. The latter must be wary, as they will not always be able to turn things around. However, their composure in the face of difficulties and their ability to bounce back are admirable and precious. It makes a big difference over the course of a season.
