PSG almost completely missed the mark in their trip to Monaco, offering virtually no attacking threat. Fortunately, the defense and goalkeeper held firm, preventing a truly embarrassing exit against a Monaco side looking to bounce back after three consecutive defeats. But the points are lost, even if the record could have been worse.
Indeed, Olympique de Marseille missed the opportunity to overtake PSG, conceding a frustrating draw against Toulouse, conceding the equalizer in stoppage time. This came after a less than impressive performance, even if it wasn’t a complete disaster. However, Lens proved more resilient after a dominant performance in Angers, becoming the somewhat surprising league leaders with a 2-1 victory thanks to a brace from Florian Thauvin.
Lille had the good sense to follow suit, thus closing the gap between the top three and the rest of the race for European qualification. Despite this, LOSC put themselves in a difficult position with Ayyoub Bouaddi’s red card in the 51st minute. But Hanza Igamane donned the hero’s mantle (once again in the 88th minute). It was a tough result for Le Havre to swallow, as they could have made a significant impact in their fight against relegation.
In the relegation battle, Nantes also faltered after a 3-0 defeat in Lyon. This was a relatively predictable result following another red card, this time in the 43rd minute when the score was still 0-0. Lyon took full advantage, dominating possession (18 shots to 6, 69%) and moving into 6th place in a very tight top half of the table.
Moreover, Rennes (PSG’s next opponent) continues its climb up the table, a far cry from the near-dismissal of coach Habib Beye at the end of October. A hard-fought 1-0 victory in Metz (12 shots to 9 and 52% possession in favor of Metz) secured a valuable point. Meanwhile, it’s frustrating for Metz, who have once again stagnated after a promising run.
The situation is reversed for Strasbourg, who have slipped back down the table after a superb start, while Brest can breathe a sigh of relief thanks to their 2-1 victory after trailing 2-1. Strasbourg dominated possession (13 shots to 6, 57%, and 5 corners to 0), but unlike Thursday’s match against Crystal Palace, they lacked a clinical edge.
Auxerre earned a point against Paris FC (1-1), a welcome boost for the bottom-placed team while sowing doubt among the Parisians. Lorient, meanwhile, climbed out of the relegation zone with a valuable victory against Nice, who continue to be a cause for concern. Coach Franck Haise has even distanced himself from European competition in favor of a “survival” objective.
