PSG secured a solid opening match, even though they gave themselves a few scares during a game marked by missed opportunities. This gave Auxerre hope, perhaps a little too much. It was after a corner kick with no defensive cover that Paris took the lead, securing three valuable points. Meanwhile, Auxerre faltered and have reason to be concerned.
This is not the case for Lens, although managing a defeat after a long winning streak (10 in all competitions) can be difficult. At least there’s the loss of first place with the 3-1 defeat at the Vélodrome. A deserved victory for Marseille, who confirmed they are a force to be reckoned with. Even if we know the toughest matches are always in the less glamorous fixtures for them.
Behind them, LOSC were swept aside, at least on the scoreline (15 shots to 13 and 8 corners to 1 in favor of Lille, 48% possession), by Gary O’Neil’s Strasbourg, who are off to a good start and will be tested again against PSG next week. This result generally tightens the European pack, with Toulouse still in contention thanks to their victory in Brest, even if the top four are pulling away.
Olympique Lyonnais continued their winning streak, confirming their improved attacking form. New signing Endrick (on loan from Real Madrid) scored a hat-trick in the resounding victory against a completely outclassed Metz side. While Rennes stumbled against Lorient, outclassed by their superior efficiency (15 shots to 3), it was a very good result for Lorient.
Monaco’s crisis continued, with the injury to their latest signing (Faes), a performance riddled with inaccuracies, and a point far from encouraging. It’s a more positive result for Le Havre, in a relegation battle where every point counts.
Meanwhile, Nice found some reassurance with their 4-1 victory in Nantes, although they will need to build on this win against opponents other than a struggling Nantes side. Neither Paris FC nor Angers managed to capitalize, but the 0-0 draw is better than a defeat for either team. Finally, Nantes vs. Nice.
