PSG were under pressure for Le Classique, given that OM had caused them problems earlier in the season and had delivered some mixed performances recently. The response was clear: the Parisians are improving physically, and the rest period has clearly helped them regain their dominance and the top spot in Ligue 1.
Lens could indeed look forward to Le Classique with a degree of confidence after their well-deserved 3-1 victory, achieved through a spirited performance, playing with 10 men from the 56th minute (Rubin Aguilar scored two minutes after making it 2-0). This further confirms Lens’ excellent form, while pushing Rennes towards another crisis. Even if the race for European qualification remains very much alive.
This is despite Olympique Lyonnais’ latest victory, achieved without playing brilliantly and with a red card (Endrick in the 61st minute) against Nantes (15 shots to 7 in favor of Nantes, 50% possession). But the 3 points are there and can only be good for this team, which is on a roll. Lille is also consistent, except that it’s on the poor side. This time, with a very frustrating draw in Metz (16 shots to 3). At least Lille stopped conceding goals. But they are still struggling to score at the moment. For Metz, it’s another point gained in the relegation battle, against a very difficult opponent.
Nice and Monaco also each secured at least one point. It’s better than a defeat, obviously, but far from enough to celebrate after a fairly even match. Nice remain too close to relegation, and Monaco missed an opportunity to climb the European places.
Indeed, Strasbourg stumbled in Le Havre, notably receiving a red card in the 29th minute when the score was already 1-0. Strasbourg caused problems again, but Le Havre capitalized and gained some breathing room. Toulouse, for their part, missed yet another chance to demonstrate their ability to qualify for European competition. Their defeat even allows Angers to join the list of clubs waiting in the wings.
Behind them, Lorient’s impressive run came to an end in a Breton derby that swung in Brest’s favor after a fairly fast-paced and evenly matched contest (13 shots to 11 and 58% possession for Lorient). For Brest, it’s a welcome boost in their fight for survival, though they mustn’t let their guard down.
Finally, Paris FC avoided falling further behind Auxerre and catching them, even though the objective was, of course, a victory. The frustration is more on Auxerre’s side, as has been all too common this season, with 13 shots to 6 in favor of AJA.
