PSG kicks off the year with a highly anticipated Parisian derby, a match they can’t afford to miss if they want to at least keep pace with Lens, or even reclaim that coveted top spot. However, Paris FC is capable of great performances and should be highly motivated at the Parc des Princes. It will be important to get back into the swing of things immediately.

This comes after watching Lens’ result in Toulouse, an 8th-placed team that has had a few slip-ups but knows how to cause problems for any opponent. It’s far from an easy trip to start the season. Olympique Lyonnais (5th) will be in action at Monaco (9th), even though Monaco have been struggling for the past few weeks.

The other key match to watch will be between Lille (4th) and Rennes (6th). Lille have been more consistent, but Rennes arrive with a certain amount of confidence. The challenge will be to recapture the momentum they had before the winter break, marked in particular by their clinical finishing. Facing Lille will be anything but easy.

In the midst of all this, Olympique de Marseille (3rd) seem to have a chance when they host FC Nantes (17th), who are still going through a very difficult period. But we know that football is never that simple. Strasbourg (7th) will have to be wary of Nice (13th), who returned to winning ways at the end of the year thanks to their Coupe de France victory (against Saint-Étienne). They still have a squad with potential, even if the season has been very challenging.

As for the relegation battle, Auxerre (16th) will be looking to pull off a surprise against a Brest side (11th) that has been particularly inconsistent this season. Angers (10th) could put this problem even further behind them thanks to their quality of play in recent weeks. Le Havre, 15th, seems like a beatable opponent, even if this team is capable of the occasional upset. Finally, we’ll be keeping an eye on FC Metz, who desperately need to rediscover their form to climb out of 18th place. It won’t be easy against Lorient (12th), who are unbeaten in their last five Ligue 1 matches (3 draws and 2 wins).
