Luis Enrique: “Do you know how many points we took against Rennes and Lille last season?”

Is this refusal to accept defeat—against Rennes and Lille—what pleases you most about the start of the season?

Do you know how many points we took against Rennes and Lille last season? Do you know? Roughly how many, in your opinion? Just one point! So, it’s very positive! You have to look for the positives. Today, obviously, we always aim to win, but against a team with a very good coaching staff that plays very well, we didn’t manage it. We played a very good first half; we created three or four chances. Lille scored, they had opportunities—that’s how it goes.

The second half belonged to us, yet Lille scored a second goal; at that moment, I told myself football is very unfair. But football isn’t a question of fairness or unfairness. It’s about scoring one more goal than the opponent. We tried to score right to the end; we kept going as usual. It shows how difficult it is to play away from home, in this stadium, or to play a Champions League match. We need to get back to our best level as quickly as possible. I’m happy with what I saw.

Beraldo “is a midfielder,” Zaïre-Emery “can play anywhere.”

Why was Warren Zaïre-Emery playing at left-back and Lucas Beraldo in midfield?

There is no logic in football. For us, Beraldo is a midfielder—a very good midfielder. It came as a surprise—because we signed him as a defender—but we found a new position for him; we discovered he could play in midfield.

Warren can play anywhere at a very high level. It doesn’t matter which side. Last season, he showed he could play at a sensational level on the right, and tonight, in my opinion, he was very good on the left. He can offer more mobility because he is a midfielder. We struggled to press at times because Lille has so many quality midfielders—players like Haraldsson, Bentaleb, and André. They have a lot of quality players.

Luis Enrique: “A minor muscle issue.”

Was taking Désiré Doué off at halftime a punishment?

No, it was a minor muscle issue. Nothing serious, but it wasn’t a tactical or technical decision.

Luis Enrique: “It would be dangerous to be at 100% at this stage of the season.”

Are you worried about conceding four goals in two matches?

Every time the opposition shoots, it’s a goal. If they keep shooting like that, we could put three goalkeepers in goal and still not be able to do anything. That’s football. Take it from my experience. There are different phases in a season. We aren’t at our best level right now—that’s clear. It would be dangerous to be at 100% at this stage of the season. But when opponents shoot like that, it’s very difficult. Still, don’t worry—by the end of the season, we’ll be exactly where we want to be.

Is it a physical issue?

We deserved better in the first half, especially with Hakimi hitting the post. Ferran, Doué, and Fabian also had chances. That’s football, but I’m not worried about what I saw.
