Matvey Safonov, Paris Saint-Germain’s 27-year-old goalkeeper, spoke to Canal+ following the Parisians’ 2-0 victory against Liverpool this Tuesday at Anfield. The win secured their spot in the 2025-2026 Champions League semi-finals (4-0 on aggregate).
Safonov: “We showed that we came here to win”
A semi-final qualification—is this a massive emotional moment?
“For us, of course, we are very happy. It was a very difficult match. We are pleased to have won in the end. We showed that we came here to win; that’s what matters. There is a lot of emotion in reaching the semi-finals. I think you can hear the celebrations (smiles). These are wonderful feelings.”
Safonov: “I have to be ready for the team when I’m needed”
Was it important for you personally to prove your level in these big games?
“Yes, I agree it was a decent performance. There were a few mistakes, but I’m happy. I can do better. I have to be ready for the team whenever they need me.”
