On Thursday evening, the Professional Football League (LFP) released an official statement announcing some good news: its broadcast rights in Spain will now be handled by DAZN (which already had agreements in other countries).
Already the official broadcaster of Ligue 1 McDonald’s in several international territories, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Japan, and Belgium, DAZN will now broadcast all Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches exclusively in Spain. This is the first time since the 2017/18 season that Spanish fans will have access to all the matches, with at least two matches per matchday featuring Spanish commentary.
The coverage will begin on May 13th with a prestigious match between RC Lens, currently second in the league, and Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning champions.
This is excellent news for Ligue 1, as it means it’s managing to attract interest in a major footballing nation. This sends an important message, as well as generating additional revenue. It doesn’t suddenly change the situation for the clubs, but it’s still good news. Hopefully, others will follow suit.
