Tomás Araújo, Benfica’s 22-year-old central defender under contract until 2029 following an extension last December, has been announced as one of Paris Saint-Germain’s targets for the end of the 2024 summer mercato. PSG Inside Actus assures us that he is still a target for this winter. Discussions have even begun.
“Tomás Araujo seems to be the focus of PSG’s attention this winter. The player is said to be in favour of a transfer, but Benfica are reluctant to let him go. These hesitations could complicate negotiations, although the player’s determination and the Parisian club’s persistent interest are factors that could weigh in favor of an agreement.
Intensive discussions are underway, but everything will depend on PSG’s ability to convince Benfica, whether through an attractive financial offer or other guarantees.”
This is an excellent player, who seems destined to impose himself at the highest level for many years to come, and there would be a logic to PSG looking to recruit in this position (Milan Skriniar’s departure and the search for a competitor/succession for Marquinhos). It is therefore conceivable that Paris will indeed try its luck for Araújo.
However, the deal is far from a done deal. Benfica won’t easily let a player like Araújo, who appeals to many clubs, go. Particularly as he has just extended his contract, there’s no need to worry about negotiations. Not to mention the fact that the Portuguese is not necessarily keen to leave. PSG could well concentrate on other options. But you never know, soccer can surprise. Particularly at the mercato.
