FIFA has decided to unite the footballing world in a solemn tribute to Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away on Thursday aged just 28. The initiative to hold a minute’s silence at each Club World Cup quarter-final underlines the impact of the Portuguese player, who left a lasting impression through his talent and commitment on the pitch.

For Paris Saint-Germain, involved in the competition, this moment of recollection will be a reminder that soccer is much more than just a competition: it is also one big family, united in times of mourning.

This powerful gesture from FIFA is a reminder of the importance of collective memory in sport, and of soccer’s ability to unite beyond rivalries.
