Philippe Montanier recently shared his analysis of the competition between Gianluigi Donnarumma (26) and Lucas Chevalier (23), two goalkeepers at the center of Paris Saint-Germain’s current debate. Speaking on RMC Sport, he praised Donnarumma’s recent form but claimed Chevalier possesses superior qualities, reigniting the conversation around PSG’s potential No. 1.
Montanier: “Over the past six months, he’s been outstanding.”
“Over the past six months, Donnarumma has been outstanding. Before that, he was very good but had some inconsistencies in his performances. When it comes to distribution with his feet and aerial presence, I believe Chevalier is better than Donnarumma.
Do these last six months reflect his true level and progression, or was it simply a purple patch? Will he fall back into certain old habits?”
For Montanier, Chevalier is developing rapidly and already surpasses Donnarumma in terms of ball distribution and aerial ability — two key aspects in Luis Enrique’s PSG setup. He also warns of Donnarumma’s historical inconsistency, despite his solid recent form, encouraging the club to think long-term with a promising young talent like Chevalier.
PSG now faces a decision between experience and potential.
Time will tell if Montanier’s prediction proves right, but in any case, the club must continue to place its trust in Luis Enrique and sporting advisor Luis Campos.
