Nuno Mendes, the 23-year-old full-back for Paris Saint-Germain and Portugal, spoke to AFP in an interview published on Monday. It was an opportunity to look back on his arrival at PSG in 2021 and his contract extension last winter, amid persistent rumors of talks with Manchester United.
Nuno Mendes: “I always wanted to stay here and help PSG reach the highest level. “
“Your adventure in Paris started with a loan. Did that put pressure on you?
It was a different country, a different language, but I was lucky to have (Portuguese player) Danilo here, who helped me a lot. I tried to learn French quickly so I could get out of the house. It’s a big club with great players, and I wanted to be part of it.
Last year, you extended your contract until 2029 with an option for an additional year. Did you have any other offers?
No. My agent talked a lot with the president. I always wanted to stay here and take PSG to the top. It was something we both wanted. It’s a pleasure to play here.”
Of course, Nuno Mendes needed a little time to adapt. It was his first club change, and he was also moving to another country. It was a significant step. He was only 19 at the time, and he had to find his feet in a different culture and a group with high expectations.
The Portuguese player gradually made his mark and is now a key player at PSG. This was confirmed by a contract extension about a year ago, after numerous rumors. In particular, there was talk of a possible transfer to Manchester United. The denial was clear.
We know that there may have been something going on, but we can only trust the player. His priority was clear, an agreement was reached, and the contract was signed to the satisfaction of all parties. Not to mention the fans, who are happy to see such a player commit to Paris for the long term. And he seems to have a real affection for the club.
