This Friday, the Ligue de Football Professionnel announced a major change in the rule for “automatic” suspensions in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 from the 2025-2026 season. This means the end of 3 yellow cards in a 10-match period.
“With reference to practices in other leagues, it has been decided to change this rule from the 2025/2026 season. From now on, the rule will consist of an automatic one-match suspension for every five yellow cards, regardless of the ten-match period.
This new simplified rule was adopted by the LFP Board of Directors on June 3 and will apply from the 2025/2026 season in Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Ligue 2 BKT, the Coupe de France and the Trophée des Champions.
As in every season, all disciplinary counters have been reset to zero cautions for the first day.”
This will mean a change of habit for tracking suspensions in Ligue 1, with the end of the 10-match period. From now on, it will be for the whole season, with no limit on the number of matches. In a way, this makes it easier to keep track of suspensions, but it will also require a certain amount of attention throughout the year. And it will be for 5 cautions, to avoid too many suspensions.
It shouldn’t be too difficult to adapt, but we’ll need to keep a close eye on the accounts at club level to avoid any nasty surprises.
